Milbank Concrete Products is proud to announce the launch of the Milbank Carbon Reduction Calculator, a pioneering tool designed to provide accurate carbon savings data for precast and prestressed concrete products, which will be showcased for the first time at the Futurebuild 2025 exhibition.

This innovative tool, developed in-house and in-line with Milbank’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, will be included as standard in all quotations from 2025, enabling architects, developers, and contractors to make informed, eco-conscious decisions from the outset of their projects.

In this blog post, our Innovation and Strategy Director, David Costin, introduces this exciting new concept for the industry.

Supporting the Path to Net Zero

The construction industry is under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, with net-zero targets set by the UK government and growing demand for greener building solutions. We are dedicated to leading the way in sustainable precast concrete manufacturing by equipping customers with transparent carbon data, ensuring they can confidently choose lower-carbon solutions without compromising on quality or performance.

The Milbank Carbon Reduction Calculator is a direct result of years of investment in sustainability. Using data calculated against our 2018 baseline, the tool reflects a range of significant improvements made across Milbank’s manufacturing processes, including:

  • Cement replacement technologies – reducing reliance on traditional Portland cement, which is a major source of CO2 emissions.
  • Biomass and solar curing methods – lowering the carbon footprint of concrete curing processes.
  • Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and electric vehicles – replacing diesel-powered transportation, cranage and machinery with greener alternatives.
  • On-site renewable energy sources – including solar power and biomass installations, which contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions across Milbank’s operations.

What Does This Mean for Customers?

For the first time, our customers will receive data about how much CO2 they have saved by using Milbank products, alongside every quote, allowing them to evaluate the environmental impact of their chosen precast concrete solutions. This will help businesses and individuals meet sustainability goals, support environmental certifications, and comply with new carbon reporting requirements being introduced across the construction sector.

By integrating carbon reduction calculations into the early planning and procurement stages, we are empowering decision-makers to prioritise sustainability without the need for additional research or calculations. This seamless approach ensures that low-carbon alternatives are not only available but are actively encouraged as part of the quoting process.

Commitment to a Greener Future

The introduction of the Milbank Carbon Reduction Calculator is a key milestone in our broader sustainability strategy. Everyone at Milbank is committed to continuous improvement in reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the wider construction industry in adopting more sustainable building practices.

Through ongoing investment in research, innovation, and technology, we are not only setting new standards for the precast concrete industry but also demonstrating its dedication to a cleaner, greener future for the built environment.

Looking Ahead: Sustainable Concrete Solutions

Milbank’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond just data and calculations. We are actively exploring new materials, innovative low-carbon concrete, and further enhancements to production efficiency to drive down emissions even further. With the construction industry evolving rapidly, we are continuing to take a proactive role in reducing environmental impact while delivering the high-quality precast concrete solutions we are known for.
